Dear visitors,
the wonderful mosaics of the Palatine Chapel, a UNESCO – World Heritage Site, periodically need to be taken care of.
Once the restoration works, the church commissioned by Roger II are completed it will be even more beautiful, bright and shiny.
Thank you for your patience.
La Fondazione Federico II
The Palatine Chapel, dedicated to St. Peter, was designed following the coronation of Roger II of Altavilla in 1130.
The interior is one of the most extraordinary places of the entire Middle Ages, a sublime work of art and a meeting point between the Latin, Byzantine and Islamic schools of art and thought.
The chancel’s mosaics, the work of fine Byzantine artists, in the central apse, highlight the presence of the “Pantocrator” giving a blessing according to the Latin canon. The one, above, in the center of the dome, is in accordance with the Byzantine tradition.
