Historical overview

On the lower floor of the Sale Duca di Montalto, following an archaeological campaign carried out in 1984, architectural elements belonging to the ancient Punic city walls of Palermo, dating back to around the 5th century B.C., were brought to light. Among these findings stand out a postern that has preserved its original appearance, the remains of one of the city’s ancient gates, and part of the carefully crafted and perfectly squared stone blocks.
